How to Remove Ice and Frost From a Windshield Fast Without Damaging It
Clear a frozen windshield quickly and safely: use the defroster, a plastic scraper and a simple deicer, and avoid boiling water that can crack the glass.

The fastest safe way to clear a frozen windshield is to start the engine, turn on the defroster at full heat and airflow, and scrape the loosened ice with a plastic scraper while the glass warms. Do not pour hot or boiling water on it, because the sudden change in temperature can crack the glass. Clear all the windows, mirrors, lights and roof before you drive.
The quick method, step by step
- Start the car and turn on the heat. Set the fan to high and direct air to the windshield. Turn on the rear defroster as well. Keep the car outdoors while it runs; never run an engine in a closed garage.
- Turn the air conditioning on if your car has it. It dries the air, which helps with the fog that appears on the inside as ice melts. Our guide to defogging car windows fast has more on that.
- Clear the loose snow first. Use a soft brush or the brush end of a snow tool. Push snow away from the car and off the roof so it does not slide onto the glass or blow into other drivers’ view.
- Scrape with a plastic scraper. Hold the blade at a low angle and push in short, firm strokes once the ice has begun to loosen. Do not use a metal blade, a credit card you want to keep or a kitchen tool, and never chip hard at thick ice.
- Use deicer if the ice is stubborn. Spray a commercial windshield deicer, following the label, and wait a minute or two. Wipe the slush away with a squeegee or the scraper.
- Clear everything. Side windows, mirrors, headlights, tail lights, number plates and the roof all need to be free of ice and snow.
What not to do
- Do not use hot or boiling water. Cold glass can crack when it is heated fast and unevenly, especially if it already has a chip or crack. Lukewarm water can refreeze and make things worse.
- Do not use the wipers to clear ice. Frozen blades can tear, and the wiper motor can be strained. Lift them off the glass or clear around them first.
- Do not use metal tools. They can scratch the glass and damage the rubber seals around it.
- Do not set the defroster to maximum heat on a very cold, damaged windshield. A chip or crack can spread. If you have one, let the car warm up gradually.
- Do not drive through a small peephole. Clear enough of the glass to see all around you before you pull away.
Deicer you can make
A simple home deicer is rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) mixed with water in a spray bottle. A common mix is about two parts alcohol to one part water. Spray it on the ice, wait briefly, and scrape. Keep it away from your eyes, your car’s paint and open flames, store it in a clearly labelled bottle out of reach of children and pets, and never mix it with other cleaning products. Commercial deicers work the same way and are the more convenient choice if you want one that is clearly made for cars.
Prevent frost before it forms
- Park facing east if you can, so morning sun hits the windshield.
- Use a windshield cover on nights when frost or ice is forecast. Fold the cover’s flaps inside the doors or secure it so it does not blow away.
- Lift the wiper arms away from the glass the night before, if your car allows it.
- Keep the inside of the glass clean. Dirt and film give moisture something to cling to, so use our tips on cleaning car windows without streaks.
- Top up the washer fluid with a winter, anti-freeze type so it does not freeze in the lines.
Keep the glass in good shape
Ice scraping is hard on glass that is already dirty or gritty, because trapped dirt can scratch the surface when dragged across it. Brush off loose grit before scraping. If you see chips or cracks, have them checked, since winter temperature swings can make them grow. A professional glass repairer can say whether a chip can be repaired or the windshield needs to be replaced.
Quick answers
Is it OK to pour warm water on a frozen windshield?
It is best not to. Even warm water causes a rapid temperature change, and it can refreeze. Use the defroster, a scraper and deicer instead.
Does hot air from the defroster damage the glass?
Not in normal use. The glass warms gradually. If your windshield has a crack, let it warm slowly and have it checked.
How long should I let the car warm up?
Only as long as it takes to clear the glass and see well, usually a few minutes. Never leave a running car unattended or in an enclosed garage.
Can I use the windshield wipers to remove frost?
Not on ice. Let the defroster loosen it first and clear it with a scraper, then use the wipers only on a free, slushy surface.
