How to Remove Coffee Stains From Clothes, Carpet, Mugs and Upholstery

Black coffee is a tannin stain that rinses out easily when fresh. Add milk or cream and you have a protein and fat stain too, which changes the plan.

To remove a coffee stain, blot it, flush it from the back with cool water, then rub in liquid laundry detergent or dish soap and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes before rinsing or washing. If the coffee had milk or cream, use an enzyme detergent and avoid hot water at first, because heat sets the protein. Don’t put a stained item in the dryer until the mark is completely gone.

Coffee owes its color to tannins, plant compounds that also give tea and red wine their staining power. Fresh tannin stains rinse out readily. Older ones, and anything that went through a hot dryer, take more work.

What you need

  • White cloths or paper towels
  • Cool water
  • Liquid laundry detergent or clear dish soap
  • An enzyme stain remover or detergent (for coffee with milk or cream)
  • Oxygen bleach that is safe for the fabric, for set-in stains
  • Baking soda (for mugs)

Black coffee vs coffee with milk

Stain What it is Best approach Avoid
Black coffee or tea Tannin Cool water, liquid detergent, then wash Bar soap, which can make tannin stains harder to remove
Coffee with milk or cream Tannin plus protein and fat Detergent on the greasy part, then enzyme soak Hot water at the start
Sweetened or flavored coffee Tannin plus sugar, sometimes dye Cool water, detergent, enzyme soak, wash Leaving it sticky; sugar attracts dirt
Set-in coffee stain Oxidized tannin Long soak in oxygen bleach, then wash Chlorine bleach on colors

Cornell Cooperative Extension stain guidance notes that for combination stains such as coffee with cream, you should treat the greasy or oily part first, then the rest of the stain.

How to get coffee out of clothes

  1. Blot the spill with a white cloth.
  2. Flush from the back under cool running water to push the coffee out of the fibers.
  3. Pretreat. Rub a little liquid laundry detergent or dish soap into the stain. For coffee with milk or cream, use an enzyme stain remover. Leave it for 5 to 10 minutes, or as the label directs.
  4. Rinse and check. If the stain is fading, wash the garment at the warmest temperature the care label allows.
  5. Soak if needed. For a lingering stain, soak in cool water with an oxygen bleach product that is safe for the fabric, following the label for amount and time.
  6. Air-dry and check. Only use the dryer once the stain is gone.

For an older stain, start by soaking the garment in cool water for about 30 minutes, then follow the steps above. Extension guides stress using the gentlest method first and repeating it, rather than starting with bleach (see the New Mexico State University stain guide).

How to get coffee out of carpet

  1. Blot up as much liquid as you can, pressing firmly with a folded white cloth. Don’t rub.
  2. Mix about a teaspoon of clear dish soap into a cup of cool water. Dab it on, working from the outside of the stain toward the center.
  3. Wait five minutes and blot. Repeat until no more color transfers to the cloth.
  4. For coffee with milk, follow with a carpet spot cleaner that contains enzymes, used as the label directs, to break down the protein and prevent a sour smell later.
  5. Rinse by blotting with a cloth dampened with plain water, then press with dry towels and let it air-dry.

The process is nearly identical to getting red wine out of carpet, which has extra tips for old, dried stains.

How to get coffee out of a couch

Check the cleaning code on the tag or under the cushions before you do anything else:

  • W: water-based cleaners are fine. Use the dish soap solution above, sparingly, and blot.
  • S: solvent cleaners only. Use an upholstery solvent cleaner as its label directs.
  • W/S: either type works.
  • X: vacuum only; call a professional for stains.

Use as little liquid as possible so it doesn’t soak into the cushion foam. Blot, rinse with a barely damp cloth, and let it dry with a fan. On leather, wipe immediately with a damp cloth and follow the manufacturer’s care instructions. More detail is in our guide to cleaning a couch.

How to remove coffee stains from mugs and travel cups

The brown ring inside a mug is a buildup of coffee residue. It isn’t harmful, but it’s easy to remove.

  1. Make a paste of baking soda and a little water.
  2. Rub it around the inside of the mug with a soft sponge.
  3. Rinse well and wash as usual.

For stainless steel travel mugs, a baking soda soak with hot water for 15 to 30 minutes, followed by a scrub with a bottle brush, loosens stubborn film. Check the maker’s instructions before using any cleaning tablet, and don’t use chlorine bleach on stainless steel, which can damage it. Our guide to baking soda and vinegar cleaning explains when each one works.

Safety notes

  • Follow product labels, and test any stain remover on a hidden spot first.
  • Never mix stain removers or bleaches. Rinse with water between products.
  • Work with a window open or a fan on when using sprays.
  • Keep products in their original containers, out of reach of children and pets.
  • If someone swallows, inhales or gets a cleaning product in the eyes, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 (US) or emergency services.

Bottom line

Treat coffee fast with cool water and liquid detergent. Add an enzyme product when there’s milk or cream, use oxygen bleach for set-in stains on washable fabrics, and keep heat away until the stain is gone. Mugs come clean with a baking soda paste.

FAQ

Does vinegar remove coffee stains?

Some stain guides add a few drops of vinegar to a detergent solution for tannin stains, but detergent does most of the work. Never combine vinegar with bleach.

Can I use hot water on coffee?

For black coffee on cotton, warm water in the wash is fine after pretreating. For coffee with milk, start with cool water so the protein doesn’t set.

How do I get an old coffee stain out of a white shirt?

Soak it in an oxygen bleach solution per the label, then wash. Chlorine bleach is an option only for white fabrics that the care label says are bleach-safe.

Why does my carpet smell sour after a latte spill?

Milk residue left in the fibers breaks down. Treat the spot with an enzyme carpet cleaner, rinse, and dry it thoroughly.
